How do we teach our children to get what they want in life?
Many parents use the words discipline, effort and work, as key pieces for their children to achieve everything they set out to do in life. The vast majority teach through conversation, either privately or as a family, but the most effective way to teach our children is by example.
Since they copy everything they see in us, especially our habits. And in this article we are going to focus mainly on how to inspire them to copy the habit of saving, whose benefits are to develop the ability to set goals, set dates and determine what it takes to make them come true.
Now, as you know, customs are not formed overnight, but start in the simplest way possible. Therefore, we are going to see 5 steps to promote the habit of saving in your family through the example:
1. Buy a piggy bank, either in the shape of a pig or another animal, the idea is to make it eye-catching. Then put it in a place where your children can see it. You can buy it at the supermarket or any store near your home. The important thing is not the design of the piggy bank, but what it represents.
2. To form a habit you must have a basic and simple rule to follow. For example, a rule could be that every day when you get home, open your wallet and take out all the coins. Select the ones that have a value less than 2 soles and keep them in the piggy bank. That is, you will keep all the coins of 1 sol, 50, 20 and 10 cents. Every day without exception before going to bed.
3. Now, do not set savings dates very far away, that is, think that you will do this for 1 year or 5 years in a row, but focus on complying with the rule that has been placed for you per week and not breaking it. If you set yourself small goals, you will feel better every time you achieve them and week after week you will notice how you adapt.
4. The reason ceramic piggy banks are so popular worldwide is because of the sound they make when a coin is inserted. Seek that your children listen every night that you are putting the coins in the piggy bank, that they learn that you have a rule and that you follow them every day.
5. Do not impose the habit of saving on them, seek to influence them with your example. To achieve this, you must show them the results of having saved. Maybe invite them to dinner and emphasize that the money they are having dinner with is the result of everything you saved in the piggy bank. Your children need to see to believe.
Finally, this is only the first step to be able to set more ambitious savings goals, but first you must start with something basic. And remember, the best way to teach your children to achieve everything they want in life is with your example.
